Just Want You

Life has been ticking along for us here. Last weekend was not what we had hoped for or planned for, but it came and brought with it sickness and discomfort. Tummy troubles are inevitable here so you take it in stride. Perhaps a day at home and in bed was what we needed. Although, once the kids were over it, they didn’t seem to agree.

Thankfully by Sunday, we were able to be up and about and Monday came as usual. Feeling better sort of comes in waves and feeling normal, I’m told, doesn’t really come. You just get a new normal. We try to be careful about what we eat and drink and how food is prepared. Mark says you just need to create a new community in your gut, so welcome to the party all you newcomers. Please don’t get too rowdy down there.

Needless to say, I wasn’t up to writing much and this week has been a lot more social for me. New friends and shopping adventures are a story for another time.

In the meantime, I’m sharing some thoughts I wrote down earlier in the week.

This song has been playing on repeat for me lately. I wasn’t sure what it was at first. I love Sarah Reeves, I love her beautiful voice and the melody of this song. I found myself coming back to this song in particular. It caught my attention. But it was the lyrics that kept me coming back.

“I don’t want it if You’re not in it I just want You. I don’t want it if You’re not in it, I just want You. Your heart, Your ways, show me Your face, Your song, Your voice, break through the noise, I don’t want it if You’re not in it I just want You, I don’t want it if You’re not in it I just want You God”

I discovered this truth a long time ago. If God isn’t in it, it’s not worth doing. We are given a myriad of opportunities to put our efforts towards on a regular basis. I can work away at something, giving it my all and yet wonder why I’m not satisfied. Why was this thing not successful? Why didn’t it turn out the way I thought it would? I can work diligently at a good thing, a noble thing, a ‘godly’ thing, a thing that is for the good of others, for the church, for our family, but if God isn’t in it, is it worth doing?

We asked ourselves this question when choosing to take on this new job and move for our family. We don’t want it if you’re not in it, we want to serve you. Only good things come from the Lord. Our success is not based on how much money we make, or how nice our stuff is, or how many vacations we go on. Our success is based on whether or not we have been obedient to God.

So yes, we cried out to God, we don’t want this unless you’re in it! And we believe wholeheartedly that He’s in it.

Yet, I’m still needing to ask God this same thing, every day. What I choose to do with each day, with my time and my resources. It’s not a one time cry to God, it’s in the now and the everyday that I want Him to take the lead of every step. I want to discover who He is and to lay my dreams and my pride and my failures at His feet. I need to. Life is messy and I am human. I am broken and often times a broken record.

I find myself needing to say this to myself when I speak to my children, ‘is God in these words, is God in this response, this reaction? Am I trading their sinfulness for my sinfulness? Am I allowing God to be in this? Am I partnering with Him or am I taking the lead?’

I need to say this to myself when an opportunity is presented to me. This is a good thing, but is this for me right now, God?

I pray that you would be blessed by this song and that you too would surrender everything, every little thing, to the God who loves you and upholds you and redeems you.

Blessings to you, wherever you find yourself today.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

Isaiah 26: 3-4

P.S. Here are the lyrics. You should check out Sarah Reeves if you haven’t already. So much of her music is ministering to me right now.

Just Want You

Sarah Reeves, Josh Silverberg, Andrew Holt, Henry Seeley

Verse 1:

Take the lead of every step I make

Even if You tell my feet to wait

Cause where You are is where I wanna be

The depth of me is calling for the deep

I don’t want it if You’re not in it I just want You

I don’t want it if You’re not in it

I just want You

Your heart Your ways show me Your face

Your song Your voice break through the noise

I don’t want it if You’re not in it

I just want You

I don’t want it if You’re not in it

I just want You God

Verse 2:

Whisper to me secrets of Your heart

I want to discover all You are

I’m leaning into Heaven for a glimpse

And I will partner with Your presence here again

All that I see be my everything

All that I dream lay it at Your feet

All that I am falling on my knees I surrender I surrender (Repeat)
